Young Artist Winner, Jennifer Jones is joined by her parents, Rose Marie and Alan Jones, and Coordinator Robin Sprague for a picture at the January board meeting.

Since 1988, the Sister Cities International Young Artists Showcase has encouraged youth from around the globe to consider the honorable mission of Sister Cities International and express their interpretation of that mission promoting peace through mutual respect, understanding, cooperation through one individual, one community at a time. Hundreds of artists have shared their talent with the sister cities community over the past 20 years. The theme this year was POWER OF EXCHANGE. The winning piece designed by Jennifer Jones was a detailed sketch of her family’s Native American culture and conversely the perceptions others have of them. Through the exchange of ideas and really getting to know people as individuals, there will be better understanding of Native American life today.

Jennifer will move on to the international competition.

representatives of Tempe. These students are part of a group of 777 students that have been exchanged through Tempe Sister Cities since the first exchange in 1972. The first exchange was to our sister city, Skopje, Yugoslavia, now Macedonia. The four students, David Wynn, Cathy Givins, Carolyn Shumway, and Jan Alexander were invited as special guests to all of this past year’s Oktoberfest celebrations. This reunion has prompted interest in another exchange to Macedonia for the original four delegates.

This will be Tempe’s ninth sister city. Additionally, Cusco and Tempe already have sister city relationships with Cuenca, Ecuador. This is the first trilateral agreement with the US and South America.

Exchanges between the three countries have many unique opportunities including

educators’ exchanges. It is hopeful that there will be an inaugural group of students travelling to Cusco this summer in the student exchange program.

It will be exciting to have conferences to promote business, tourism and education between the three cities. Project Cure is currently putting together a container filled with medical supplies for Cuenca, Ecuador. The next goal for Tempe Sister Cities is to send a similar container to address the needs of Cusco, Peru as well.
