Carlow, Ireland

Sister City since 1998

Tempe and Carlow established their partnership in Ireland on the same day as Carlow’s Bicentenary Commemoration as the site of the 1798 “98 Insurrection.” More than 20 delegates, including then-Tempe Mayor Neil G. Giuliano participated in this exciting event.

Tell me more about Carlow…

  • This town is light and clean: Carlow holds the great distinctions of being the first town in the British Isles to have electricity and earned the reputation as the cleanest city in Ireland in 2005.
  • Carlow is a university and market town among rural villages: Carlow is home to St Patrick’s College, the first ecclesiastical college in Ireland established in 1789, and the more recent Regional Technical College as well as a courthouse thought to be intended for Cork, many castle ruins, and lively pubs.

Where is Carlow?

Carlow is located 45 miles southwest of Dublin, flanked in the west by the Barrow Valley and the Killeshin Hills and in the east by the Blackstairs Mountains.
